Flat-headed Snakes are fairly rare in the Brazos Valley.
Compare this snake to the similar looking Rough Earth Snake,
which is a much more common snake in our area.

Flat-headed Snake from Missouri.
These are very small, non-descript brownish snakes. They usually have a salmon pink or orange stripe down the underside.

The ground color of Flat-headed Snakes varies from dull brown to bright reddish brown.

Flat-headed Snake from Duval County, Texas.
Flat-headed snakes from southern Texas often have a black cap, as seen here. Snakes in our area typically have a brownish cap which doesn't contrast as strongly with the body color.
